Grand Isle's Own Socrates

AS REPORTED IN THE LAFOURCHE PARISH "DAILY COMET"

"We listened to the engineers who said we needed a levee from sand because we thought they were smart," said Dean Blanchard, a life-long resident and seafood-dock owner. "Then when it washed away, we listened to them again, and we still thought we should because they were engineers and they were smart … 13 times we listened to them, and the levee washed away. And now we should be thinking, maybe they're not so smart."

Blanchard is among island residents who say a strong, hard seawall like concrete one that protects Galveston, Texas, is what should be built.

Locally famous for his shoot-from-the-hip diatribes, Blanchard didn't have much time for idle chatter Wedneday, as he scooted around the sandy highway on his all-terrain vehicle, helping town officials and firefighters when he could, ferrying some of them from place to place. Debris thrown by the ATV landed just below Blanchard's eye -- the reason he now sports a duct tape patch of sorts.
"They said I needed stitches, but I ain't got time for stitches," Blanchard said.
